Getting onside with your Obliques.

If you look at a skeleton side on, it’s easy to see that the front half of the skeleton sort of hangs in mid air with a big gap between the ribs and hips.

The term ‘core strength’ refers to the muscles that support this overhang. If you don’t have core strength the spine has to support itself which it does by settling a large proportion of its weight onto the spinal discs, compressing them and squishing them out into the path of all the nerves that run alongside the spine. This can cause the discs to rub hard against each other, often causing intense lower back pain.

Both the internal and external obliques are part of this supportive group of abdominal group of muscles. They wrap around both sides of the abdomen in a criss-cross pattern.

The external obliques sweep forward down the trunk at about the same angle as the ribs, the internal obliques run at right angles underneath. They combine with the Transversus abdominus, which runs around the waist like a big, wide belt.

The Obliques all work in together and allow you to twist and bend and when they all contract together these muscles compress the abdominal cavity, giving you a tight waist and a flat tummy. Keeping these muscles strong and loose assists in avoiding a large range of unpleasant and sometimes debilitating conditions.
